Penal Substitution vs. Servanthood Interposition

PSA: “The word ransom clearly means payment.”
SI: A ransom can mean release by interposition, not repayment, and Jesus defines it by servanthood, not legal settlement.

PSA: “Jesus died in our place, therefore substitutionary atonement.”
SI: Substitution does not equal atonement—stepping in to save a life is not repaying a debt.

The Problem of Worshiping Jesus

People often imagine worship as an act of lowering oneself before visible greatness. One bows before a throne, prostrates before majesty, trembles before power. That model works easily with the image of a mighty king. But it becomes deeply problematic when applied to Jesus, because whenever one goes looking for him in that mode, one finds not a monarch demanding ceremony, but a servant washing the feet of others.

Why are you persecuting Me?

What does it really me "persecuting me"? How come Saul was persecuting Jesus who was already sitting on the Heavenly throne? But it is clear that this question is not about persecuting others but namely Jesus Chist, the Son of God.

The disciples were no different. They argued about who would be greatest. They wanted seats of honor. They wanted recognition.

And Jesus responds—not with a rebuke only—but with a complete reversal.

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

Matthew 20:28 clearly states that Jesus came “to give his life as a ransom for many.” A ransom is a payment. Humanity owed a debt because of sin, and Christ paid that debt on our behalf. This is substitutionary atonement in its simplest form.
