The apparent contradiction between the Bible and the Qur’an is well known. The Gospels report that Jesus was arrested, crucified, killed, and afterwards seen alive. The Qur’an declares:

“They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them” (Qur’an 4:157).

Before attempting to reconcile these accounts, we must first ask what the Qur’anic statement actually denies.

Does the Second Clause Merely Describe the Method of Killing?

One interpretation treats the sentence as partly redundant:

The encounter between Jesus and Mary Magdalene in John 20 contains an urgency that is easy to overlook. Mary has just recognized Jesus. Her despair instantly turns into overwhelming relief, and naturally she clings to him. Yet Jesus does not allow the reunion to continue. He interrupts it almost immediately:

“Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.”

Then he sends her to the disciples with a message about precisely that ascent.

The final chapters of the Gospel of John become much easier to understand if they are allowed to speak in their own sequence.

Jesus repeatedly tells the disciples that he must go away. His departure is not presented as an unfortunate loss but as something necessary. Unless he goes, the Paraclete will not come. More surprisingly, Jesus even insists that his departure is advantageous. The one who comes afterward will not represent a deterioration of his presence but an improvement upon it.

God the Father cannot be surprised. Nothing in creation can reveal to Him something He did not already know. No human decision, no act of loyalty, no betrayal and no victory can increase His knowledge. The world is not an experiment conducted for the benefit of an uninformed God.

The Logos stands in a very different relation to what happens within creation.

His joy does not come from learning something. It comes from finding something he wanted to find.

One of the most persistent religious ideas is that Heaven is the reward for a good life. The statement sounds so natural that hardly anyone asks what it implies. Yet if Heaven is truly a reward, then goodness becomes a transaction. A person behaves properly now because something enormously desirable will be given later. The scale of the promised payment is so immense that even the language of sacrifice begins to lose its meaning. What sacrifice could really be called costly if the person making it knows that an eternity of perfect life is waiting as compensation?

One of the most remarkable features of Jesus' teaching is that it repeatedly overturns ordinary human reasoning. His sayings are not merely surprising; they appear to contradict the very logic by which people naturally live. Whoever wishes to save his life must lose it. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. The last shall be first. The grain of wheat must fall into the earth and die before it can bear fruit. These are not isolated aphorisms scattered throughout the Gospels. Together they reveal a single underlying principle—a law that governs the Kingdom of God.

For two thousand years, the figure of Jesus has generated something unusual in human history: a stable stalemate. There is enough evidence to persuade billions that he lived, taught, was crucified, and rose again. Yet there is also enough ambiguity to sustain serious doubt. Entire civilizations have formed around affirming him. Entire intellectual traditions have formed around questioning him. And neither side has eliminated the other.
