[Scene: the synagogue interior, midday light falling across the scrolls. The air hums with expectation.]
Jesus (reading):
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor…”
(He rolls up the scroll, gives it to the attendant, and sits.)
Jesus:
“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Crowd (soft murmur):
Our own! Joseph’s son! The blessing of Nazareth! Surely He will work mighty wonders here, greater than in Capernaum!
Elder:
You speak with grace, Yeshua. The people are proud. The Spirit rests upon you. Show the sign to confirm what we already know — that the Lord’s favor rests on His own house first.
Jesus:
Indeed, you will say to me, “Physician, heal yourself. Do here what we heard you did elsewhere.”
But I tell you truly — no prophet is received in his own town.
Elder:
What are you saying? That strangers are more worthy than your kin? Than those who raised you?
Jesus:
There were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, yet the prophet was sent to a widow in Sidon.
Many lepers in Israel, and none was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.
Grace flows where hearts bow low — not where status stands tall.
Crowd (indignant):
You insult your own! You place gentiles above the chosen? You shame your own house?
Jesus:
I honor you, yet I tell you truth: the nearer one stands to the fire, the more gently he must gaze.
You have known me as neighbor; now know me as servant of the Most High.
Only the humble see heaven in what they call common.
Elder (angered yet trembling):
You make the chosen equal to the stranger! You undo the order of God!
Jesus:
I restore the order you have forgotten.
For the Highest sits with the lowest, and the meek inherit what pride cannot hold.
He who is close must bend lower than all — that is the law of love.
(Silence falls. Some weep, some burn with rage. Jesus looks upon them with deep affection.)
Jesus:
You have no need of miracles; you have lived beside the miracle itself.
But if you wish to see the works of God, become as those who expect nothing — and you will see everything.
