I believe in Jesus Christ,
the same yesterday, today, and forever.
I believe he came not as a giant conqueror
but as the frail Messiah,
the servant of the lowly,
the healer of the broken,
the Lamb who was slain.
I believe his power is hidden in weakness,
his greatness is revealed in humility,
his kingdom belongs to the little ones,
and his throne is the Cross.
I confess that many stumble over him,
expecting another,
ashamed of his meekness,
offended by his poverty.
I will not look for another.
I believe he will come again —
the same Jesus, the same frail Messiah —
and he will recognize as his own
those who recognize him now
in the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the sick, and the imprisoned.
Therefore I will follow him,
I will serve the least,
I will embrace mercy,
I will honor weakness,
until the day I see him face to face.
Amen.
